Kaspersky: WannaCry software has helped send spammers to steal large sums of money

In the second quarter of 2017, cybercriminals involved in distributing unsolicited e-mails attempted to take advantage of users' concerns when WannaCry ransom attacks occurred in May.

Many people who have been victims of ransom attacks are trying to retrieve their encrypted data again. The fraudsters have sent unsolicited e-mails and phishing attacks, offering users different services to combat these malicious and widespread attacks.

This was one of Kaspersky Lab's main findings in its report "Unwanted E-mails and Phishing Attacks in the Second Quarter 2017".
The WannaCry ransom hit more than 200,000 computers around the world, provoking a great deal of panic, and spammers quickly took advantage of the opportunity.

The researchers also discovered a wide range of messages offering different services, such as WannaCry protection and data recovery, as well as organizing educational seminars and awareness sessions for users.

In addition, successful spammers have successfully implemented a traditional scheme involving fraudulent offers to install software updates on infected computers. However, the links redirect users to phishing pages where the personal data of the victims were stolen.

One of the main phenomena observed in the past three months is the number of corporate messages addressed to corporate networks. According to Kaspersky Lab's research, the prevalence of these messages has increased since the beginning of the year.

Spammers have started to hide malicious messages in the form of channels of communication and communication between companies, using corporate mail services, including real signatures, logos, and even banking information.

Cybercriminals also combed and sent zero-hour attack packets in an archive attached to an e-mail that is intended to steal FTP, e-mail, and other passwords. Kaspersky Lab's experts point out that most attacks against the corporate sector involve financial targets.

In addition, the researchers found that there was an increase in the number of mass messages loaded with malicious Trojan horses sent on behalf of international delivery services in the second quarter. The spammers send shipping reports containing information about the delivery of fake parcels that do not exist at all.

In order to infect computers or steal login profiles, criminals have been found to publish malware-laden links, including the Emotet Trojans targeted for banking channels, first discovered in 2014. Overall, the volume of malicious mass messages Up 17%, according to the new Kaspersky Lab report.

"During the second quarter of the year, we noticed that the main phenomena of spam attacks and phishing attacks continued to grow," says Darya Gudkova, an expert on spam analysis at Kaspersky Lab.

The WannaCry ransom attacks by means of mass messages are proof that cybercriminals are very attentive and familiar with the totality of international events. In addition, cybercriminals have begun to focus more on the corporate sector - B2B - because they are earning a lot of money. We expect these phenomena to continue to grow, and to increase attacks against companies in terms of number and gender. "

Other important trends and statistics identified by Kaspersky Lab researchers in the second quarter of 2017 include: The average spam volume rose to 56.97% as Vietnam became the most popular source of spam attacks, ahead of the United States and China.

The top 10 countries include Russia, Brazil, France, Iran and the Netherlands.
The Necurs network is still active, according to the report. However, experts monitored a reduction in the volume of spam sent from this network and its instability.

Germany is one of the countries most targeted by malicious e-mail attacks. China came second, followed by the United Kingdom, Japan and Russia. Other common targets include Brazil, Italy, Vietnam, France and the United States.

Kaspersky Anti-Phishing Anti-Phishing System was launched 46,557,343 times on Kaspersky Lab users' computers. Brazil has the largest proportion of affected users (18.09%). Overall, 8.26% of Kaspersky Lab users worldwide are exposed to phishing attacks.

In the first quarter, the main targets of phishing attacks remained the same, primarily targeted at the financial sector: banks, payment services, and e-shops.
